You can always buy baby washcloths and use those for napkins at the party…the mother can wash them and use them at home. If she has any theme, you can go to a craft store and see if they have wooden shapes that go with the theme and guest can paint and personalize them for the nursery.
I think photos, perhaps similar to a scrap booking can be a really nice gift, they last forever and can be looked at any time. What I did for my sister was I made little cards for guests to fill in titled “words of wisdom for mom to be” each guest can write something helpful and you could take these cards with the photos and put in an album, and perhaps give it to her as your ’special gift’.
i just had my baby shower which was a hawiian theme and it was so fun. i made favors for eveyone, a bag with candy, a little baby bottle filled with bath salts, and bead necklaces with shell shapes. we had coconuts filled with hawiian candy, and real pineapples. i was planning for it to last 2 hours,, it went on for 4 hours we had so much fun. games… guess how many jelly beans in a bottle, people bring in baby pics of themselves and you guess who is who, have a baby first piggy bank and let the guest put their spare change in it. a lot of other things too.
My friend went to a baby shower where each table had a different theme basket that were given away as game prizes. She loved it. Some of the themes were:
movie night (movie, popcorn, candy, snacks, Blockbuster Video gift card.)
makeover (facial moisturizer, make up, mirror)
manicure (hand lotions, nail polish, nail polish remover, cotton balls)
reading (reading light, bookmarks, books, Barnes ‘n’ Noble gift card)
gardening (gloves, seeds, pot, watering can)
Also, whenever I plan any party, I visit the pro’s website for ideas (Martha Stewart)
My mother asked people to bring a book with them because of my love of reading and how important I think it is to read to children. Many people brought two or three books and wrote personalized messages in them….now we have a very full library of both fun baby books and classic children’s books…it was such a nice touch and if you figure out how much all those books add up to, it was such a generous gift!
At my shower, we didn’t do games really. We had a themed basket on each table with a bottle of wine in it and other goodies… bath salts, candles, etc. How we decided the recipent of each basket was through a poem that was on each table… here is an example (my guests all enjoyed this and it was fun for us watching them!) Instead of giving points with ours, the ladies passed the poem around the table and the person holding it after the last line won the basket.
1. The news is out, quick send a cable, the point goes to the lady across the table.
2. If someone wears a dress of blue, she must take your point from you. If blue cannot be seen, it goes to the one wearing green.
3. I will now read another verse…one point to the gal with the largest purse.
4. We are getting tricky, here is a real humdinger! A point for the one with the most rings on her fingers.
5. Wow! What a success! A point for the guest with the most buttons on her dress.
6. Alas, these points are not for you. They now go to the one with the largest shoe.
7. Let’s get this party started girls..two points to the one with the cutest curls.
8. Mommy is anxious. Daddy is nervous. Two points to the lady who drove the furthest.
9. There won’t be time to practice, there won’t be time to rehearse. Three points to the gal with the most money in her purse!
10. We hope you all are having fun. We have tried to include most everyone. For the largest purse and the largest shoe, three points to the girls to the left of you.
11. We’re ending this rhyme, it wasn’t tough! A prize for the girl with most points tallied up!
You can scan your guests before the game starts and make changes as you need to according to what they’re wearing, etc.
Also, in the invitations, you can include a little poem that requests that the guests bring a book of their choice instead of using a card. This will help start a library for baby!
Although cards are nice
They’re read once or twice
Maybe three or four times at best
A book is a treasure
Forever and forever
So instead of a card
To be put aside
Please give the little baby
A book with your name inside
It will be read to our little tyke
Before bed each night
And we will thank you
Forever and forever!
The most special and memorable baby shower centerpiece I’ve ever seen was a large diaper cake, decorated to look like a big cake. It matched the pink baby shower theme and all the guests just oohed and aahed, and the MTB had her picture taken beside it with several guests. It was *really* cool. Check out this website. It also has a page of baby shower planning ideas:

I am sure that the baby shower will be extra special just because there is obviously lots of love and care going into planning it. MTB is lucky to have you planning her baby shower!
Handmade gifts are real cool for the occasion. You can just prepare a craft of your own for the party and let the guests admire it. The walls can be decorated with rag dolls put in small bags, just like baby kangaroos in mother’s pouches. Name the dolls in the name of the baby and give them to the guests as souvenirs. Besides this you can always send a baby shower ecard to your best friend as a token of love and affection. You will get a lot of them at
I’m planning my own baby shower which is actually tomorrow! I am on a low budget but I love everything to be elegant and classy.
Invitations: I made myself, bought pink and white cardstock, ribbon, and photo paper. It was a couples shower so I printed out a picture of my boyfriend and I and glued it down to the invitations. Came out great! Also very cheap compared to the same idea I found online for about $200 for 75 guests.
Games: I made raffle tickets and personalized it with a sonogram picture and the date of the event. (Raffle tickets for Diaper Fund). An advice book I made out of a pretty pink Journal with the same ribbon from the invitations and a picture of the babys sonogram on the front. I bought onsies (diff sizes) from a consignment shop and some fabric paint and markers and am going to have the guests decorate for the baby.
Favors: I uploaded the babys sonogram picture, a message and the date of the event to VISTA PRINT where I had them make small magnets (like a business card) for very cheap! I also made flower pens and tied the same type of ribbon I had for the invitations and a tag that said thank you for joining us..plus the date of the event. Great for the advice book!
Decorations: I made a diaper cake specialized just for my baby with her name and sonogram pictures all over it. For the tables I bought glassware and filled it with hershey kisses and stuck the flower pens in them for a great centerpiece.
Cake: This idea I love the most, I had a family friend make me a little cake that is shaped like a teddy bear, pink and white to match the theme and also about 100 cupcakes with the same type of flower I did the flower pens with, to surround it on a tiered cake stand.
If you need help with anything just let me know! I can go on and on but this is getting to be long!!
